When you have lost your nick
Not all networks have nick regstration, if you part you migth loose the nick you are using to somone else. But no need to be rude, ask politely and just wait. Somtimes, asking nice is all that takes, somtimes you have to hope for that the one who are using the nick you want have a more unstable interent connection than you.
If you are using a nick and somone asks for it back, find somthing else, it is really a pain when you do not appare with your regular nick. Well…if they are rude: make som insults on my behaf.

katla: I’ve had it for over 12 years.. I use it once a year..

katla: yep
katla: it’s rare that I’m here.. so it won’t be an issue
katla_: can i have it back then?
katla: when I leave, yes

katla: until then.. you’ll just have to deal with it
